Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services responded to a structure fire shortly after 1:30 this afternoon at 6898 Yellow Creek Road near the Cherokee-Pickens County line in northeastern Cherokee County.
When firefighters arrived on the scene, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a chicken house. According to incident commander, Kerry Hughes, a portion of the structure was used as a residence. A Pickens County resident, Tommy Dean, drove by the structure and noticed that it was on fire. He immediately went to the door to notify any occupants of the situation. Two boys, ages 8 and 14, were inside the structure and escaped without injury. The boy’s father, age 53, was not home at the time of the fire. The American Red Cross was called in to assist the family.
Georgia Forestry was called to create a fire break around the structure to keep the fire from spreading. The structure was completely destroyed.
Yellow Creek Road was blocked in both directions until operations were complete. Cherokee County Fire Investigator, Ossie Delay, is investigating a cause of the fire.
