Status of GDOT Construction of Abbotts Bridge/Jones Bridge Intersection Improvements

A group of concerned residents and commercial property owners/tenants of the Jones Bridge area, led by Charlie Roberts of Roberts Properties, rallied recently to alert local and state officials of the need to expedite the completion of the intersection improvements at Abbotts Bridge and Jones Bridge Roads. Currently the project is slated for completion by July, 2007. Representatives from the group met with Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Harold Linnenkohl on Wednesday, March 8th. Excerpts of a report of the meeting, distributed by Vicki Gavalas, Director of Communications for GDOT, are below:

Representatives from the Jones Bridge community and county leadership met on Wednesday with GDOT Commissioner Harold Linnenkohl to discuss the progress of the intersection improvement project at Abbotts Bridge and Jones Bridge Roads. In attendance were Commissioner Riley, Chair Handel, Angela Parker of Fulton County Public Works, Brandon Beach of the Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce, Charlie Roberts of Roberts Properties, Geoff Berlin of Johns Creek Community Association and Tom Doyen and Patrick Yaeger of zumBrunnen.

The meeting was very productive and resulted in the promise of all parties at the table to make this project a high priority.

Commissioner Linnenkohl stated that, “We will make this a focused project and a priority within this agency. We want to be partners with this community. We have a firm commitment to maintain and improve our infrastructure and mobility. We need and want the input of our local community residents and businesses as we make these improvements; moreover, we are committed to keep the public – our customers – informed, aware and safe through the completion of the project.”

Linnenkohl also indicated that he would be meeting with CW Matthews Contracting Company on Thursday morning and would discuss this project further at that time.

Everyone at the table understood that this project is federally funded with matching dollars provided by Fulton County and that there is no pot of money available from the federal or state coffers to put towards accelerating this project. However, innovative re-thinking of construction processes and the continued cooperative efforts between the GDOT, Fulton County, the contractor and the community should help us reach the goal we are ALL eager for – the timely completion of this project.

We will continue to advise you of any developments in the dialogue with GDOT officials.
