Another Fulton County community started down the road to possible cityhood Monday with the blessing of the Georgia House.
By a vote of 127-21 and with no debate, the House approved legislation that would allow a community of 20,000 residents in northwest Fulton County to incorporate as the city of Milton.
A referendum on incorporation would be held July 18, in conjunction with the primary elections, and could make Milton Georgia's 533rd or 534th city, if the Senate and governor agree.
A similar vote is planned for the same day in another north Fulton community, Johns Creek, based on a bill given final legislative approval last week.
The Legislature for decades balked at creating new cities in metro Atlanta until last year when Republicans took control of the General Assembly and helped Sandy Springs achieve its 30-year goal of cityhood.
Since then, there have been proposals for the city of Dunwoody in DeKalb County and the cities of South Fulton, Johns Creek, Milton and Chattahoochee Hill Country in Fulton County, according to the Georgia Municipal Association.
