Two student organizations from Lanier Technical College recently competed successfully in state-level skills competitions. The Phi Beta Lambda organization, a club consisting of students from business and computer programs, and the Skills USA team consisting of students in technical and industrial programs both represented the college well.
The Phi Beta Lambda conference was held April 11-13 in Atlanta and included students from all over the state of Georgia competing in various business and computer-oriented skills competitions. Three Lanier Tech students from the Oakwood Campus qualified for the national competition: Shelia Carter won second place in Cyber Security and first place in Telecommunications. Shelia was also elected to the 2008 - 2009 PBL State Officer Team. Randall Pruitt won first place in Project Management, and Faye Humphries received third place in Management Analysis and Decision Making.
The Lanier Technical College Oakwood chapter of PBL was also recognized for raising the most funds among state chapters for the March of Dimes. Students collected $2,637 for the charity.
Other competitors at the PBL conference included Bennie Bruce, Tia Moody and Kenneth Hewell.
The Phi Beta Lambda chapter at the Winder Campus also had a successful weekend in Atlanta. Heather Jones finished out her year as PBL State President. Ashley Watson and Amanda Nettles won a hard fought battle in Battle of the Chapters. Colleen Welch and Andrea Harding placed 5th in Desktop Publishing, Bebe Ahazie placed 5th in Justice Administration, and the Local Chapter Annual Business Report placed 3rd in the state. Janett Godwin competed in Computer Applications and Kelli Cronier competed in Word Processing.
SkillsUSA held their 2008 State Conference April 18 – 20 at Heart of Georgia Technical College in Dublin, GA. There were over 400 students from 26 Technical Colleges competing in 68 different contests.
Lanier Tech entered 18 students in 12 contests and the students combined for three first place and three second place finishes.
The first place finishers qualify for the national Skills USA competition to be held this summer in Kansas City were Christy Grissom in Customer Service, Tim Hudek in Architectural Drafting, and Daniel Blackstone from the Lanier Tech’s Dawsonville Campus in Automotive Service.
Second place winners were Grant Myland in Firefighting, Raul Mar in Technical Drafting, and Sheila Carter, Tavan Goodin, Theresa Puckett, and Gretchen Willard in Quiz Bowl.
Other students participating in the Skills USA competition were Justin White in First Aid/CPR, Josh Davidson in Automotive Refinishing Technology, James Rowe in Collision Repair Technology, Lauren Caselli in Cosmetology, and Ricky Reid in Precision Machine Technology. Shannon Flemming, Amanda Nettles, Ashley Watson, and Colleen Welch teamed up in in the Health Knowledge Bowl.
Last year, Lanier Tech had three students win national honors with first place finishes in Skills USA national competitions.
