People aren’t the only ones suffering from these tough economic times. Pet rescue organizations throughout the country are reporting sharp increases in the number of animals surrendered by families who are no longer able to care for them. Foreclosures are having a devastating effect on family pets as their owners move to alternative housing that isn’t pet-friendly. And finding homes for these cats and dogs is becoming harder, as fewer people are willing to take on the expense of pet ownership.
As recently as March, adoption numbers for the Humane Society of Forsyth County were comparable to previous years. In April, however, only 5 cats and 13 dogs were placed – a tiny percentage of the animals awaiting permanent homes – and the numbers remained low in May and June. Because HSFC is a no-kill shelter, there is a limit to the number of animals which can be housed. The adoption center is at full capacity, the waiting list for cats is several months long, and the number of dogs needing help inches higher every day due to the increase in owner surrenders.
