The Atlanta Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located on Barfield Road in Sandy Springs will close on June 30 for approximately 18 months. Extensive interior renovation work will be done during the closure. The Atlanta Temple was originally dedicated June 1, 1983 and has been in use since that time. Upon completion of the renovation, the temple will host a public open house.
Latter-Day Saint temples are sacred structures that are dedicated as Houses of the Lord Jesus Christ. They are holy places of worship where individuals make sacred covenants with God. Because temple worship is important in both the Old and New Testaments and because the LDS church claims to be the re-established or restored original Christian Church, it follows that temple worship is central to the LDS faith.
Latter Day Saint Temples are accessible to church members all over the world. There are currently 129 temples in use. An additional 17 temples have been announced or are under construction in locations as varied as Quetzaltenango, Guatemala; Kiev, Ukraine; and Rome, Italy.
Because making covenants with God is such a solemn responsibility, individuals cannot enter the temple until they have spiritually prepared themselves and been active members of the Church for at least a year. During the public open house, prior to rededication services, all interested visitors will be invited to attend tours of the temple.
