The Forsyth County Engineering Department will hold a public information open house regarding the widening and reconstruction of Old Atlanta Road from Sharon Road to McGinnis Ferry Road Thursday, November 12. The meeting will be held at Sharon Elementary School, located at 3595 Old Atlanta Road in Suwanee.
This project proposes widening the existing two lanes of Old Atlanta Road to a four-lane roadway with a 20-foot raised median, curb and gutter, sidewalks and turn lanes, as needed. The purpose of this open house is to provide the public an opportunity to view the proposed concept design for Old Atlanta Road, ask questions and comment on the proposal. The open house will be conducted between the hours of 5 and 7 p.m. The event will be informal and the public is invited to attend anytime during these hours.
Written statements concerning this project will be accepted until December 12, 2009. Written statements may be submitted to:

To whom it may concern,
Please tell me which County Commissioners are pushing for this road project, and why they think we need another underutilized parkway in Forsyth County. I travel this road every day. The only backup I encounter is at McGinnis Ferry Rd. in the morning. Double turn lanes onto McGinnis Ferry after it is widened will correct this problem for a fraction of the cost of the proposed project. Considering the current economic downturn, I find it hard to believe that my county leaders want to spend money we do not have on a project we do not need. Old Atlanta Rd. is a residential road used primarily by the residents of the subdivisions it leads to. Turning it into a major thoroughfare would only invite unwanted traffic, possibly and probably truck traffic as well.
On a more personal note, I live in Aberdeen along Old Atlanta Road. The noise level near the current road already prevents my family from spending any time on our back deck. With the additional traffic and noise the new road will bring, we will have to wear earplugs to go outside. Even if there was a need for a road this size, there is no need for a 20 foot wide median. How can you justify taking part of my backyard and the property of 160 others to build a landscaped median, and then tax us to build it and maintain it indefinitely?
If the traffic increases to the projected levels twenty years from now, that would be the time to consider adding a lane or two. However, forget the median. Leave the land in my back yard. I will maintain it at no cost to the taxpayers of Forsyth County. Shelve this plan.
Sincerely,
Timothy D. Webster
