Water . . Water . . . Everywhere and a Federal Judge in Florida Says We Can’t Drink a Drop – I hope you caught the recent news that a US District Court ruled that unless Congress intervenes, Metro Atlanta will lose it’s access to water in Lake Lanier in three years. The ruling proves that Mark Twain was right – “Whisky is for drinking and water is for fighting.” Nothing could be more devastating to the future of this community and Metro Atlanta than shutting off our water (water that originates in our own back yard).
Your Chamber of Commerce has been and continues to be an active part of the 1071 Coalition (www.1071coalition.org), an alliance of business and civic groups focused on the importance of maintaining water levels in Lake Sidney Lanier that sustain water supply, recreation, and economic prosperity through the advocacy of appropriate, science- based water releases necessary for the ACF river basin. I encourage you as a business person to visit the website and join us as we make a business case for Lake Lanier and our access to it. The 1071 Coalition is a great vehicle for everyone to get more involved in the water discussion. I would also encourage you to take a look at the attached Op/Ed piece that Lt. Governor Cagle submitted to the Gainesville Times. It captures a significant portion of what we must do to take control of our own destiny related to water. Your Chamber is advocating that we not just write a great Op/Ed piece. . . but act quickly.
