Most of the time, I don't care for wines with cute names. This attitude however, cannot always be applied to Aussie wines, since they love cute names and bizarre looking labels. I just tried one that I really liked with one of those Aussie type names. The 2008 Shoo Fly Shiraz is more than just a cute name, and a somewhat different label (after all, who thought a picture of a fly on the label would help sell wine?), it is a rock solid Shiraz with stunning character!
The other night my wife prepared our famous Australian Wallaby Baked Pasta, (lots of meat, cheese, and pasta) and we opened a bottle of the Shoo Fly Shiraz, and man was it sensational! This is a Shiraz just bursting with flavors of raspberry and blueberry, finishing long and smooth, with a little spice, and a taste of mellow tannin at the end! Coming out of South Australia with grapes form McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, and Clare Valley, this is a "knock your socks off" Shiraz!
It has spent ten months in new and seasoned American and French oak, and comes in at a healthy 14.5% alcohol level, but still does not finish hot. I cannot think of any pasta or red meat that it would not pair well with. It was perfect for our Wallaby Baked Pasta, but I would think it would show at its absolute best with Rack of Lamb! I found no current scores so far, but past ratings have been between 87 and 91. Norm's score on this one would be a 91!
