Changes in Life and Death

My how the world has changed. When I go back and watch an old movie or TV show that was from the 50’s, 60’s or even 70’s, it reminds me of almost what seems like a lifetime ago. It does seem that those were much simpler times - certainly a simpler attitude toward so many things in life.

With the passage of time has come so many opportunities that did not exist in this county as I was growing up. With a population of just over 3,000 and the major industry being farming, you could say our lifestyle here was truly a simple one. It has not been very many generations ago that it was not uncommon to see multiple generations of a family living in the same house. Babies were born at home, weddings took place at home and people were kept at home when a death occurred. Certainly there were no I-Pods, cell phones, satellite TV, or any of the modern things that seem common place today.

Change has not only come to our everyday lives, but it has also come to funeral service as well. When I first started working at the funeral home in 1970 most every service we provided was almost the same. We always prepared the remains, had two full days and nights of visitation, a church funeral and ground burial. We took many of the people back to their homes for the visitation and the friends and neighbors would gather there until time for the service. We would deliver chairs, register stands, lights, and a coffeepot to the residence and then go back for them after the service. There were about 6 or 8 caskets to choose from and almost everybody got the same outer burial container or vault. A lot of the time the men from the community would meet at the cemetery to dig the grave.

A lot has changed since those times and most of it to the benefit of the families going through this difficult experience. We now have funeral homes equipped with the latest technology so that we can personalize each service to make sure that each service is unique to each life. No two people are the same and no two services are the same. With either traditional burial or cremation services, we are only limited by our imaginations when it comes to arranging a service. The most important thing is that we take care of each family’s emotional needs and focus on giving them as pleasant an experience as possible so they can begin their grieving process.
