U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., Tuesday afternoon praised the Senate’s unanimous passage of a resolution that encourages greater support for Veterans Day. Isakson, who is a member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, co-sponsored the resolution.

“Every year, we in the United States celebrate Veterans Day, which Congress established many years ago for a very important reason. Without the sacrifice and courage of our veterans, there would be no United States of America,” Isakson said. “I am proud to honor these men and women on Veterans Day and every day. When I say my prayers at night, the last one is always for the men and women who keep us safe.”

The resolution encourages U.S. citizens to demonstrate their support for veterans by treating Veterans Day as a special day of reflection. It also encourages schools and teachers to educate students on the accomplishments veterans have made to the United States and its history.

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, originally honored the end of World War I, which officially took place on Nov. 11, 1918. In 1954, Congress approved legislation establishing Nov. 11 as a federal holiday honoring American veterans of all wars.
