Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, in Ward's Funeral Home Chapel for Louella Smith Thomas, 83, Lula. The Rev. Deron Crocker and the Rev. Jewell Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Westview Cemetery in Lula. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Mrs. Thomas was born in White County and had lived most of her life in Hall County. She was the daughter of the late James T. and Katie Mae Saxon Smith. She had formerly worked at Baldwin Garment Company for 34 years and was a homemaker. Mrs Thomas was a member of Living Mission United Methodist Church, active in the Ladies Club and had served on several committees. She loved cooking and gardening. Mrs. Thomas was preceded in death by three brothers, Grady, Clyde and Harold Smith; and a sister-in-law, Brenda Smith. She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Merlin Thomas of Lula; brother and sister-in-law, Wiley and Ruby Smith of Lula; sister and brother-in-law, Christine and Jack Hulsey of Clermont; sisters-in-law, Lucille Smith and Raedelle Smith, both of Lula; nephews and nieces, Garnett and Linda Smith of Lula, Duward and Martha Hulsey of Clermont, Darrell Hulsey of Clermont, Mike and Terry Smith of Gainesville, Clinton and Susan Elkin of Dawsonville, Cindy and Steve Smith of Lula, Tim and Kim Smith of Lula, Janien and Richard Venson of Flowery Branch; a number of great-nieces, great-nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews; and caretaker, Davida Warren. Ward's Funeral Home, 758 Main St., Gainesville is in charge.
