Family-Placed Death Notice WOMACK, Roy Roy Carlton Womack, February 27, 1933 - October 16, 2009 - Roy Womack, born and reared in Gibson, Georgia, was the son of the late Cary Carlton Womack and the late Emma Lou Timmerman Womack. After graduating from Gibson High School, he entered the United States Air Force. He graduated from the Military Police School at Fort Gordon, Ga. then served as a military policeman in the European Theater during the Korean Conflict. After his service in the USAF, he entered and graduated from Trooper School at the University of Georgia. He is a graduate of Georgia Military College and the National Police Institute at Central Missouri State University, where he was elected and served as President of his class. In 1956, he was assigned to the Georgia State Patrol Post in Madison, and soon after, met Mildred Ann Carson. In March of 1957, they married. In 1967, he was promoted to the position of Commander at the Madison Post. In 1970, he received the Officer of the Year Award by the Shriners, in which Governor Lester Maddox made the presentation. He was consistently promoted throughout his career, holding several staff positions of the Georgia Department of Public Safety Headquarters in Atlanta, GA, with his last assignment at Headquarters serving as Planning and Operations Officer. The last twelve years of his career, he served as Troop Commander, with the title of Captain, of the Southeastern portion of Georgia with posts located in Washington, Thomson, Augusta, Sylvania, Swainsboro, Statesboro and Savannah. Although he served in many locations throughout the state of Georgia, he always made his home in Madison. Roy was very involved in the Madison community, and served as a City Councilman in Madison from 1989 - 1999. While a City Councilman, he served as Madison's representative on the Georgia Municipal Association Legislative Committee and chaired various in-house committees. In 2000, he received a commendation by the Georgia State Senate for his outstanding and distinguished service as a City Councilman for the City of Madison. He was a member of the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center, Morgan County Historical Society, Masonic Lodge #376 and the Calvin George Post of the America Legion. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Madison-Morgan Chamber of Commerce, was President of the Madison-Morgan Touchdown Club, and served on its Board of Directors. He was a member of the Madison Baptist Church and served on the Board of Deacons, serving as Chairman as well as Director of Sunday School. He served and chaired various other committees throughout his life while a member. He was a member of Lambda Alpha Epsilon Fraternity; a lifetime member of the Georgia Municipal Association and the Peace Officers Association of Georgia. In addition to his wife, Roy is survived by a son, Scott Carson Womack and a daughter-in-law, Melissa Vandervort Womack, of Madison; a daughter, Leah Womack of Atlanta and three grandchildren, Christopher Alexander Salmons, Carson Matthew Womack and Collin James Womack, all of Madison. The family will receive friends Sunday, October 18 from 5 until 7 pm at A.E. Carter Funeral Home. The memorial service will be held Monday, October 19 at 11 am at Madison Baptist Church. Memorials may be made to the Madison Baptist Church Building Fund. A.E. Carter Funeral Home has care of arrangements.
