ATLANTA – Southbound traffic on Georgia State Route 400 between Windward Parkway and Holcomb Bridge Road will be reduced to one lane Friday night and all day Saturday as Department of Transportation contractors shift travel from the outside (right) lanes to the inside (left) lanes. The work will begin at 9 p.m., Friday, and continue until approximately 5 p.m., Saturday.
Extremely heavy traffic and long delays are anticipated southbound. Motorists are advised to utilize alternate routes if possible and to exercise caution if they must travel this corridor of GA 400.
At the conclusion of the shift, southbound traffic will utilize the same number of lanes as before – two lanes from Windward to Haynes Bridge Road, and three lanes from Haynes Bridge to Holcomb Bridge. No new lanes will be opened to traffic at this time. The outside bus shoulder lanes in this section of roadway also will remain closed until further notice.
The shift will allow contractors to complete the re-striping of the road and erect several overhead signs during the coming weeks. At the conclusion of that work, additional southbound lanes will be opened between Windward and Holcomb Bridge.
.
Other Department work this weekend will necessitate the closure of one lane of I-20 EB near Fulton Industrial Boulevard overnight Friday; the closure of one lane of I-75 NB between Barrett Parkway and Glade Road all day Saturday; and various single and multiple lane closures on I-75/85 SB (The Downtown Connector) between 10th Street and North Avenue throughout the weekend.
(All Georgia DOT work schedules are dependent upon weather and subject to change or cancellation if conditions become inclement.)
The GA 400 widening is being constructed for the Department by Archer Western Contractors, LTD, at a cost of $47.6 million and scheduled for final completion by September, 2007. It has added one NB lane between Holcomb Bridge and Haynes Bridge Road and two NB lanes between Haynes Bridge and Windward. Future work will add one NB lane between Windward and McFarland Road, one SB lane between McFarland and Haynes Bridge, as well as auxiliary lanes southbound. The project also will include the installation of sound barrier walls at several locations and a center median wall.
