Fourteen school bus drivers will compete at the 22nd Annual Fulton County School Bus Road-e-o championship on Saturday, April 29. The event begins at 10 a.m. at the North Fulton Transportation Facility, 410 South Main Street in Alpharetta.

The 10-event competition tests drivers’ abilities and perception in handling a school bus, with events such as:

  • The Serpentine. Drivers attempt to weave their buses through a row of traffic cones without touching any objects.
  • Straight Line. Bus drivers drive along a line of tennis balls as closely as possible while trying to avoid touching any balls.
  • Offset Alley. Drivers journey through a tunnel of varying obstacles, requiring drivers to expertly monitor their mirrors and maneuver their vehicles.
  • Railroad Crossing. Drivers’ skills and awareness of railroad crossing safety are tested.

To be eligible for the county competition, bus drivers had to successfully compete in the local Road-e-os in north and south Fulton County. The top six drivers from each end of the county, as well as two top-scoring “rookie” drivers, will participate in the April 29 contest.

Local police and fire officials will serve as competition judges. Cash awards will be given to the top six winners, and the top four will receive Road-e-o jackets. Trophies will be awarded to the top two winners, who will go on to compete at the district Road-e-o on May 20 in Cherokee County.

In the event of rain, the Road-e-o will be rescheduled to May 6.
