ATLANTA, August 2, 2006 – AID Atlanta, a non-profit, community-based AIDS service organization, will host its 16th annual AIDS Walk Atlanta on Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, in Atlanta’s historic Piedmont Park. Last year, more than 14,000 people participated in the AIDS walk and raised nearly $1 million dollars.
AIDS Walk Atlanta is the southeast’s largest AIDS fund-raising event. The Walk proceeds support AID Atlanta and 12 other HIV/AIDS services organizations in the metro Atlanta area benefiting local citizens living with HIV and AIDS.
“The Walk is an interactive, impacting way that the community can take action and celebrate life while also remembering our loss to this epidemic,” said Steve Balfour, interim executive director of AID Atlanta. “We are enthusiastic and optimistic about engaging participants in many activities, including the quilt, run, walk and other events.”
The 16th Annual AIDS Walk Atlanta will unite more than 14,000 participants representing churches, schools, corporations, community organizations, and family and friends of those affected by HIV/AIDS. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that 10,000 to 15,000 living adults and adolescents in Georgia may not be aware that they are infected with HIV and some experts feel that these numbers are higher.
“We draw strength and inspiration from the unwavering commitment of the metro community to overcoming AIDS,” said Charlie Frew, president, board of directors, AID Atlanta. “AIDS remains a serious public health concern and the participants of AIDS Walk Atlanta continue year after year to make a difference in changing the course of this pandemic.”
Online registration is available at www.aidswalkatlanta.com and registrants are encouraged to create teams by walking with friends, family and co-workers to raise funds. The walk will begin at Piedmont Park in Midtown at 12:30 p.m. on Oct. 15, 2006. For additional information, fundraising ideas or to volunteer at the Walk, please call the AIDS Walk office at 404-876-9255.
