Donald McCullough, a composer and conductor from Washington, D.C., has compiled a work incorporating textual and musical fragments preserved at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Written by prisoners in concentration camps in Poland during World War II, McCullough has woven these selections into a work entitled Holocaust Cantata: Songs from the Camps. The piece is written in English and includes narration, choruses, and solos, with piano and cello. A work of extraordinary power, dealing with an intensely uncomfortable subject, it was the goal of composer McCullough to "transform statistics into people." In this regard he is enormously successful, and the Holocaust Cantata will be one of the most moving and inspiring evenings you experience this season.
The program opens with choruses from Elijah, the monumental oratorio by Felix Mendelssohn. Featured soloists in the Holocaust Cantata will be Deborah L. Numark, Soprano and Cantor at The Temple; Ryan Taylor, Baritone, Co-Artistic Director of the Southeastern Festival of Song; and Daniel Laufer, Associate Principal Cellist of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Laufer will also perform Silent Woods for cello and piano by Antonin Dvorak.
Tickets are $20/$15 for students and seniors (60+) and are available by phone at 770.594.7974; online at www.mosingers.com; and at the door. DISCOUNT TICKETS ARE AVAILABLE UNTIL OCTOBER 10th! CLICK HERE TO ORDER.
The Holocaust Cantata is presented in partnership with The William Breman Jewish Heritage Museum and is funded in part by the Fulton County Arts Council and the Georgia Council for the Arts.
