Karen Richardson announced that she will kick off her campaign for Johns Creek City Council Post 3 on Wednesday, September 6 at 7 P.M. at her home, located at 555 Windermere Park Court, Alpharetta, GA 30022, in the Windermere Park subdivision. The kickoff will also be an organizational meeting for her volunteer campaign.
“It feels right starting our campaign at home, because protecting our home and our neighborhood is what got us started on this path of neighborhood activism, leading to my bid for election to City Council,” said Richardson.
Karen Richardson is best-known as the “zoning expert” for her community. She served as Zoning Chair and Board Member for the Johns Creek Community Association and Chaired the Johns Creek Organizing Committee’s Community Development Committee, addressing zoning and land-use for the emerging community.
“Zoning should be more than a bureaucratic maze of rules and regulations,” said Richardson. “It impacts every aspect of our quality of life, from transportation to education. It is our vision for how our community should develop and it reflects our priorities and standards for our community.”
Community standards have become a major issue in Johns Creek with the increase in housing density, loss of trees and greenspace, and most recently, a highly visible adult business seeking a permit to operate in the new city.
“As the primary representative for the Johns Creek Community Association on zoning matters, I fought on the frontlines to protect our community against inappropriate zonings and other threats to our community standards,” said Richardson.
The desire for local control over zoning and revenue, and the growing discontent with traffic congestion and stalled road improvements inspired the cityhood movement in North Fulton.
“This is no time for on-the-job training,” said Richardson. “I’ve worked closely with members of the organizing committees to define the transition plans that will serve as a foundation for our new government. I am the best-qualified candidate to continue the work of building a viable city and to protect our community in its formative stage.”
In addition to her work on zonings, Karen Richardson has been active in her Parent-Teacher Association, serving as Treasurer for Abbotts Hill Elementary School, and has served as Room Parent Coordinator and Staff Appreciation Week Coordinator. She has also served as President and Treasurer of the Windermere Park Homeowners’ Association.
Karen and Eric Richardson will celebrate their 17th wedding anniversary in October and have three children, Andrew, Samantha and Miles. Before deciding to become a stay-at-home mother and community activist, Karen worked as an education consultant with Eastman Kodak. She earned her bachelor’s degree in History from the University of Rochester, and her Master of Science in Instructional Design, Development and Evaluation from Syracuse University.
