The Taxpayers Bill of Rights requires that the Fulton County Board of Education hold three millage rate public hearings due to the fact that the FY07 budget did not include a full millage rollback to offset increases in property assessments.
Three hearings were held in June, but due to a recent change in the Fulton County tax digest, the three hearings must be repeated in order for the school system to be able to collect an approximate $5 million in additional funding.
The tax digest initially estimated the property tax increase percentage to be 1.38%, which was used by the school system in calculating a proposed millage rate. However, the percentage is now estimated at 2.55%.
The new hearings are set for:
• June 26, 10 a.m., Fulton County Schools Administrative Center, 786 Cleveland Avenue SW, Atlanta
• June 26, 6 p.m., Dunwoody Springs Charter School, 8100 Roberts Drive, Sandy Springs
• July 3, 6 p.m., Fulton County Schools Administrative Center, 786 Cleveland Avenue SW, Atlanta
The millage rate is the rate at which property taxes are levied on property. Although the School Board is proposing to keep the millage rate at 18.107, the same as the previous fiscal year, some property owners may have a slight increase in taxes due to reassessments. Fulton’s millage rate, however, still remains the lowest in the metropolitan Atlanta area.
The public hearings are open to all Fulton County residents. The Board is expected to adopt the millage rate on July 3, 6:30 p.m., at the Administrative Center.
