During the first 30 days that these new speed limits are posted, our law enforcement professionals will only be issuing “warning citations” on the designated roadways. All other roadways within the city limits of Alpharetta will be enforced accordingly. Those motorists who exceed the limit posted on a roadway in which the speed limit has not been changed will still be subject to a citation (pending officer discretion and extenuating circumstances).
Alpharetta, GA… On Monday, August 21st, 2006, the Mayor and Council of the City of Alpharetta amended the existing speed zone ordinance in order to incorporate newly annexed streets, streets that have been renamed and changes to existing speed limits for the purpose of public safety.
The City of Alpharetta’s Speed Zone Ordinance was last amended April 19, 2004. Since then numerous streets have been annexed into the City and the names and extents of many roadway segments have been changed due to construction. Per Georgia Uniform Traffic Code, all speed limits on roadways which are to be enforced by municipal law enforcement agencies (using radar detection) must be submitted to the Georgia Department of Transportation for approval, approved by the municipality and approved by the Georgia Department of Public Safety. The Engineering and Public Works department initiated these processes and presented the changes before the City Council.
Councilman Doug DeRito, Liaison to the Public Safety Department stated, “My colleagues on Council unanimously approved these changes to create a safer passage on our City streets, especially those that flow through residential areas where kids play and pedestrians recreate.” Public Safety Director Gary George continues, “Speed is one of the most significant factors that can be directly attributed to accidents with injuries, and having limits set by our City Council allows our officers to ensure voluntary compliance through our education and enforcement measures.”
Although the speed limit signs are being changed throughout the City in accordance with the recently passed amended Ordinance, our law enforcement professionals will issue warning citations for the first 30 days starting on Wednesday, August 23rd.
The list of streets and applicable speed limits is being distributed in conjunction with this press release. Please direct any and all inquiries regarding this ordinance amendment to our Engineering and Public Works Department at 678.297.6200.
