Alpharetta, Ga…The Alpharetta Police Department is proud to present the next Citizens Police Academy starting on October 12, 2006.
Alpharetta Police Department Citizens Police Academy provides community members with an inside look at local law enforcement. The Citizens Police Academy began in 1997 and was created to develop a strong partnership between community members and Alpharetta Police Services. The Academy’s goal is to increase public trust and understanding in our agency through openness and education. The Academy allows participants to experience conditions similar to the types of training Police Officers receive and exposes participants to their daily operational duties.
Police Services members teach the Citizens Academy, each highlighting their individual area of expertise. During the 10-week Academy, citizens learn about the K-9 program, juvenile and gang issues, officer survival, crime scene investigation, DUI enforcement, use-of-force issues, records and dispatch, police ethics, discipline policy and philosophy, drug enforcement and education, and criminal and traffic laws. Instruction in these and other topics will consist of lectures, demonstrations, tours, and hands-on.
A minimum of an eight hour ride-along will be scheduled at some point during the class prior to graduation and a waiver form needs to be completed and signed for this activity. Students will have an opportunity to gain a full understanding of patrol support equipment including cars, safety and communication equipment while responding with the officer to citizens’ calls for service.
There are no physical requirements. You will not be asked to do anything you do not want or are capable of doing. You make the decision on your level of participation. Potential candidates for the Citizens Police Academy must be at least 21 years of age, live or work in the City of Alpharetta, have no prior felony convictions and no misdemeanor arrests within one year of application. Enrollment is limited to approximately 30 students per academy. There is no cost to the citizen to attend the academy, just a commitment to attend all required classes. Each class will be three hours in length from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm once a week on Thursday for ten (10) weeks at the Alpharetta Police Department Headquarters 2565 Old Milton Parkway.
People who are selected to attend will be notified by e-mail, mail, and/or telephone prior to the start of the class. The class will be filled based on the order in which completed applications are received. When the class enrollment is full those who did not receive a placement will be given priority during the next class.
Additionally, graduates may be eligible to join the Citizens Auxiliary Patrol Service (CAPS) for more training programs after the successful completion of the academy. Each applicant must answer each question on the application form. If the question does not apply, state the reason it does not apply.
For further information or to sign up for the next class, please send an e-mail to our Academy Contacts: Officer Scott Vash (svash@alpharetta.ga.us), Officer Jim Little (jlittle@alpharetta.ga.us) or Sgt. R. Heath (rheath@alpharetta.ga.us).
