A restructuring in the Forsyth County Government will likely be moving the county’s 911 Communications Center from beneath the jurisdiction of the Sheriff’s Office into its own entity. The move is slated to be part of the Board of Commissioners’ consent agenda at their next meeting on November 7.

The 911 Communications Center dispatches to and serves the Sheriff’s Office, Fire Department and Rural/Metro ambulances, the county’s contracted provider of emergency medical transport services. The restructuring to a stand-alone entity aligns Forsyth County with the standard structure of 911 centers in surrounding metro-Atlanta counties.

"This was a matter which was discussed for several months," said County Manager Jeff Quesenberry. "We do not believe that this department should report to either the Sheriff’s Office or Fire Department, since it is utilized by both. It will now report directly through me to the Board of Commissioners."

The timing of the restructuring coordinates with the FY2006 budgeting process, as well as the upcoming opening of the new Forsyth County Public Safety Complex. The 911 Communications Center will be relocating to the Public Safety Complex when it opens in spring 2006. No additional costs will be incurred as a result of this restructuring.
