Taking a proactive measure in an effort to reduce potential dangers to the community, Forsyth County will be razing the Ducktown School located at Doc Sams Road and Evans Road. The building is filled with asbestos and youngsters playing in and around the structure face possible safety hazards.

Several months ago, Forsyth County Board of Commissioners Chairman, Jack Conway, and Fire Chief, Danny Bowman, requested that Forsyth County staff explore options for tearing down the school, which was determined to be a safety risk and beyond repair. Since Ducktown School was not deemed a historical site, plans were made for the asbestos removal and tear-down of the building at the earliest possible date.
Anderson Environmental began asbestos removal last week, which is anticipated to be completed soon. Following that, Forsyth County Building Services and the Roads and Bridges Department will work in their spare time to handle the destruction and removal of the structure. That process is expected to take approximately three to four weeks.
The Ducktown School is located on county property behind Fire Station 4. While future use of this land has not been finalized, it may be utilized as a site for a new fire station. Until a use is determined, the area will serve as a green space.
To recognize the School, a representative from the Historical Society of Forsyth County is scheduled to be in attendance at the August 18th Board of Commissioners meeting, at which time the Historical Society representative will be presented with the sign from the school.
