ATLANTA – Re-striping the new northbound lanes on Georgia State Route 400 – the final step before those lanes are opened between Holcomb Bridge Road and Windward Parkway – will occur this weekend, weather permitting. The work will require lane closures, traffic shifts, periodic traffic stoppage, and pacing, beginning Friday night; and the closure of both the Norcross and Roswell exit ramps of GA 400 NB at Holcomb Bridge, beginning early Saturday morning and likely lasting all day.

Motorists are strongly encouraged to avoid travel on GA 400 north of Interstate 285 throughout the weekend. All GA 400 traffic, both north and southbound, will be extraordinarily heavy. Multi-mile northbound back-ups are expected. (Northbound drivers desiring to exit either eastbound or westbound at Holcomb Bridge will be directed to proceed to the Mansell Road exit and return southbound to Holcomb Bridge.)

By Monday morning, however, it is expected that the work will be complete and the six-mile section of GA 400 NB between Holcomb and Windward will have four travel lanes open to the public. At that time, the outside (right) shoulder which has been used as a temporary travel lane during construction will be closed; it later will be reopened exclusively for emergency vehicles and GRTA and MARTA buses during designated periods of heavy traffic.

(All Georgia DOT work schedules are dependent upon weather and subject to change or cancellation if conditions become inclement.)

The GA 400 widening is being constructed for the Department by Archer Western Contractors, LTD, at a cost of $47.6 million and scheduled for final completion by September, 2007. In addition to adding one NB lane between Holcomb Bridge and Haynes Bridge Road and two NB lanes between Haynes Bridge and Windward, future work will add one NB lane between Windward and McFarland Road, and one SB lane between McFarland and Haynes Bridge. The project also will include the installation of sound barrier walls at several locations and a center median wall.

Georgia DOT encourages the public to access the Department’s NaviGAtor travel services at its website (www.georgia-navigator.com) for detailed construction, lane closure and traffic incident information; and also to use the site to establish their own “My NaviGAtor” report for personalized, real-time traffic information. The public may also call the Department’s traffic and construction hotline toll free, 24 hours, seven days a week, at (404) 635-6800; or call *DOT on their Verizon or Cingular cellular phones to speak with a Transportation Management Center operator.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is committed to providing a safe, seamless and sustainable transportation system that supports Georgia’s economy and is sensitive to both its citizens and its environment.
