In a show of the tremendous outpouring of generosity of Forsyth County residents, $51,341.88 was raised by the Forsyth County Fire Department’s Boot Drive over the Labor Day weekend. Those funds will be turned over to ‘The Place’ to assist Hurricane Katrina evacuees.
“Firefighters never cease to amaze me when they set out to help those in need,” said Fire Chief/Director of Emergency Management Danny Bowman. “Children who are injured and adults enduring times of disaster bring out a mindset of care and determination. Nowhere in America are there more dedicated firefighters than right here in Forsyth County. A heartfelt thanks to our citizens, as well, who made this effort such a success.”
‘The Place,’ which is a non-profit social services agency, will utilize the funds to help provide basic necessities for hurricane evacuees seeking refuge locally. According to Sandy Beaver, director of ‘The Place,’ Forsyth County has assisted a total of 237 individuals so far and 36 of those are students now enrolled in the Forsyth County School system and 30 are preschoolers. Some of the necessities that will be provided include items such as gasoline and grocery cards.
“The county is pretty well set up to help with these needs and it’s possible because everyone is working together,” said Beaver.
All evacuees are welcome to contact ‘The Place’ for information.
