Deputies from the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office will be distributing free gun locks at Cumming Wal-Mart on Saturday, July 23, Sheriff Ted Paxton announced today.
The free gun lock program, which is a part of “Operation ChildSafe,” is a nationwide program whose purpose is to promote safe firearms handling and storage practices among firearms safety. The program is supported by a U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) grant and the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and is a component of Project Safe Neighborhoods.
The National Shooting Sports Foundation is the nation’s shooting sports industry's largest and most diverse trade association. With over 2,500 members, the NSSF manages a variety of outreach programs with a special emphasis on efforts to promote firearm safety education to all gun owners.
The goal of Project ChildSafe is to reduce firearms accidents in the home due to unauthorized use of a firearm by a child or other individual. One primary objective of Project ChildSafe is to inform and educate all firearms owners on key safety issues and to provide firearms safety kits that include a gun locking device.
The gun locks, which were provided at no cost to the Sheriff’s Office by Project ChildSafe, will fit any type of firearm. They will be available on a first-come, first-served basis at Wal-Mart between the hours of 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 23. Deputies will be on-hand to demonstrate the proper way to use the locks.
