A team of assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), will arrive November 11, 2006, to examine all aspects of the MARTA Police Department’s policy and procedures, management, operations and support services, Chief of Police Wanda Y. Dunham announced today.

The Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) Police Department was initially accredited in March of 1996. Verification by the team that the MARTA Police Department has continued to meet the Commission’s state-of-the-art standards is part of a voluntary process to gain re-accreditation – a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, Chief Dunham said.

As a part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the public are invited to offer comments to the assessment team by calling 404-848-4992 on Monday, November 13, 2006 between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Telephone comments are limited to ten minutes and must address the Department’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards. A copy of the standards is available at the MARTA Police Department headquarters, 2424 Piedmont Road Atlanta, Georgia 30324. The contact is Lieutenant Tanya Y. Young at 404-848-4919.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the MARTA Police Department’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to:
