At their Board meeting Monday night March 14, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to accept a bid for the construction of the road to connect Brookwood Parkway to Mathis Airport Road.
The project that was approved was the original, or "straight" alignment of this road. There had been an alternative routing of this connector road presented to the county that would have included pronounced curves, and would have brought the four-lane connector much closer to existing homes in the Hunters Run and Laurel Springs subdivisions.
There had been a great deal of discussions about the two routes, including Town Hall-like meetings coordinated by Post 2 Commissioner Brian Tam. The decision as to whether or not to approve the original "straight alignment" project had been delayed at six previous Board meetings, according to last night's agenda.
Commissioner Tam acknowledged that the decision process had been a challenging one. Tam made a point to thank John Cunard and the staff in the Forsyth County Engineering Department for their analyses, and to thank fellow commissioners Laughinghouse and Conway for their involvement. He also expressed appreciation to the adjacent homeowners and to the development group that had proposed the alternate S-route.
Ultimately, Commissioner Tam stated that he had come to the opinion that the alternate S-route would impose a "negative impact on the quality of life of adjacent homeowners," and made a motion to approve the original straight alignment of the connector road. The Commissioners then voted 5-0 to accept the bid from GP Enterprises for construction of the road.
