Gary Smith, Forsyth County Registrar, will be speaking at the next Republican Women of Forsyth County meeting. Mr. Smith and his wife, Diane, have just returned from Mississippi where they assisted victims of Hurricane Katrina.

The women's group is collecting items at a meeting on Saturday, September 24, to send to these victims. Here is a list of the items that Mr. Smith indicated they need. If you are able to contribute any of these items, they will be very much appreciated.

1. No more clothes – it is sad to see the unsorted clothing lying in enormous piles. There is not enough manpower or covered locations to handle this. The only clothing I think is needed would be NEW underclothes in the original plastic packages.

2. Money Cards – the economy needs to be restarted and this can help

3. Camp stoves and propane

4. Pans – skillets of any type i.e. cast iron

5. Utensils – big spoons, spatulas etc…

6. Plastic cups and plates – they are using a lot of disposables now

7. Tents (large) – anything water proof – it has not rained since the hurricane, but it will and when it does it will be awful – while FEMA is sending 500 camping trailers a day, there will still be people without shelter…..there is a comment that they do not want people in tents because of mosquitoes – something to think about

8. Things to keep clothes in i.e. suitcases, large plastic boxes with lids

9. Something to wash other stuff in i.e. large plastic tubs

10. Lighters or matches

11. C batteries – the flashlights being distributed were small and couldn’t use D batteries

12. Feminine products

13. Coolers

14. Tupperware – any type

15. Bug spray – there was a lot and more will be needed

16. Neosporin, Bindery, eyewash, contact lens solution, chap stick, chewable vitamins, antibacterial materials – i.e. Peril

17. Vinyl work gloves

18. Peroxide/rubbing alcohol

19. Tylenol

20. Detergents, mops, brooms, rags

21. Spices – especially salt and pepper

22. Beef Jerky

23. Radios and headsets i.e. radios that do not require electricity would be even better

24. Rubber boots

25. Dust face masks

26. Construction materials – hammers, nails, roofing material

27. Generators – The electric companies i.e. The Southern Company (Mississippi Power, Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Florida Power and Light are working heroically to get the lights back on…but there will still be need for the above items)

28. Rat traps

In addition, everything should be as prepackaged as possible. Make it easy for folks to just pick up a box and it will have a specific purpose i.e. cleaning, hygiene, construction etc. and identified as such.

If you can not attend the Republican Women of Forsyth County meeting and would like to donate items, please contact Carol Tunstall 770-205-3252 or Peggy Green 770-772-0690.
