Each week this October, the Forsyth County Fire Department will be providing useful tips and information to help keep you and your family safe.
- Always be sure to have working smoke detectors in your home.
- Have a Fire Safety Plan at home and be sure that all family members know what to do in the event that smoke detectors should alarm.
- Due to the anticipated high cost of fuels this winter, many people may be utilizing kerosene heaters and woodstoves. Take extra precaution by inspecting your heater to ensure it is in good working order and that the room in which it is used is well ventilated. Use only the recommended fuel for your type of heater, and store flammable materials in approved metal containers outside of the home.
- Have your furnace inspected for proper working order, and leave furnace repairs to qualified specialists.
- If using a fireplace or woodstove, have the chimney inspected and cleaned.
- Never discard hot ashes near or inside the home. Place them in a metal container outside and away from the home, taking care not to place the container on a wooden deck or porch.
- Always dial 911 in case of any emergency.
