Alpharetta, GA…The City of Alpharetta is warning residents whose homes were damaged in last weekend’s storms to exercise caution in selecting contractors and companies to make needed repairs.
City officials have learned that individuals commonly known as “travelers” may be operating in the North Fulton area and looking to take advantage of homeowners wanting to make repairs quickly.
“These individuals will approach homeowners with offers to make home repairs, especially roof construction, very quickly and at seemingly low cost,” explains Jim Hines, Alpharetta Building Official. “They will get a homeowner to pay anywhere from 50% to 75% of the cost before beginning the job, work for a day or less, and then disappear without completing the repairs.”
Officials in Cherokee County are currently investigating multiple reports of such incidents, which have largely targeted elderly victims. Some victims also have reported items stolen from their homes.
“With the heat on in Cherokee and the storm creating opportunity here, we are very concerned that Alpharetta residents may be targeted,” explains Hines.
Those seeking contractors to make home repairs are reminded to select companies that are bonded and insured and to ask for and check references from previous customers.
“If someone comes to your door offering a deal for making repairs that seems to be too good to be true, it probably is,” Hines warns. “If they seem suspicious, remember a description of their appearance and contact the Alpharetta Police Department immediately.”
Alpharetta residents whose homes were damaged in last weekend’s storms are encouraged to call the City building division at 678-297-6080.
