The Roswell Fire Department would like everyone to be fire safe during the holiday season. Taking just a few preventative measure can help prevent a tragedy. This is a time of year that we all should pay close attention to fire safety. During the holidays, people use their fireplaces, set out candles and other decorations that can sometimes be a fire hazard.

The Roswell Fire Department recommends the following tips to help make your holiday season a safe one.

Fireplaces/chimneys

· Do not use an excessive amount of firewood.

· Use only the recommended amount of the chemical fire logs.

· Dispose of your fireplace ashes only after a significant time for cooling and only into a metal container that should be kept clear of your home.

· Have your fireplace inspected and/or cleaned by a reputable chimney service once a year.

Christmas trees

· Be sure to water them frequently, a dry tree is very combustible and easily set afire, we recommend using a balled and burlap tree.

· Do not set tree up near the fireplace or any other heat source.

· Utilize the recycling program when finished with your tree, do not try to burn it in your fireplace.

Candles and other decorations

· Extinguish candles when you are not in the room, they can be toppled over or blown over and cause a fire.

· Only allow children to light a candle if an adult is present and they should be never to light them without an adult present.

· When putting lights up on your home, do not staple the wires, and be sure that the wires show no signs of damage, if any damage is observed, purchase a new set of lights.

· Do not use decorations in your home that are highly combustible such as hay, straw or dry garland.

General fire safety tips

· Check your smoke detectors every month and change the batteries every 6 months.

· Have an escape plan for your entire family and practice the plan.

· Be sure that your entire family is aware of fire safety and that it is talked about by the entire family. Fire safety is a family project.

These are just a few fire safety tips that we hope will help your family be fire safe. If you have any questions or would like more information, please call our office at 770-641 3730.
