The kitchen at the Roswell Firehouse # 2 is about to get a designer makeover. The firehouse has won $10,000 to spruce up the place in the Maxwell House/HGTV “Spruce Up Your Firehouse” photo-essay contest.

Fire departments in 10 U.S. cities participated in the contest by submitting a 250-word essay and a photo of a room they want to fix up. A panel of judges picked two finalists in each city and members of the public voted online for the firehouse they deemed to be most worthy of a “sprucing up.”

In the metro Atlanta area Roswell Firehouse # 2 received the most votes, beating out Loganville’s Fire Department for the designer spruce up. The winning essay told of the cramped kitchen and dining area with faded walls, mismatched furniture and the cabinets and appliances that are ready for replacement. The firefighters hope to use their prize to replace the old counter tops, cabinet doors, sink, oven, and refrigerator, and make the place a lot less cramped.

Roswell Fire Chief Ricky Spencer wanted to thank all those who went on line and voted for Firehouse #2. “This could not have come about at a better time. We are in the process of re-modeling our fire stations that are in need of a face lift. Winning this contest fits right into our schedule. We want to make sure our Firefighters have a nice and enjoyable place to stay for the 24 hours they are on duty. We want them to feel at home at our Fire Stations while they are away from their families.”

The job of sprucing up the kitchen area gets underway this week when Los Angeles-based Kristan Cunningham, an interior designer and a host of HGTV’s Design on a Dime, consults with the firefighters to discuss their hopes and ideas for the room. Then, a local designer will take over the project, working directly with the firehouse on a design that will be unveiled in June at an open house hosted by Maxwell House.

Firehouses from these cities took part in the contest: Atlanta; Buffalo; Chicago; Cincinnati; Cleveland; Detroit; Orlando; Philadelphia; Tampa; and Washington, D.C.
