Roswell, Georgia, March 27, 2006:

A team of Assessors from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA), will arrive on April 22, 2006 to examine all aspects of the Roswell Police Department's policies and procedures, management, operations and support services, Chief Edwin Williams announced today.

Verification that the Roswell Police Department meets or exceeds the Commission's thorough and rigorous standards is part of a long term voluntary process. The Police Department first achieved accreditation in 1995.To maintain this distinction, the Department must undergo a periodic, meticulous examination of its policies and procedures. A successful on-site assessment will result in the Department being awarded its third re accreditation. International accreditation is a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, Chief Williams said.

As a part of the on-site assessment, agency employees and members of the community are invited to offer comments at a public information session on Tuesday, April 24, 2006 starting at 7:00PM . The session will be conducted in the Council Chambers, Roswell City Hall, 38 Hill Street.

If for some reason an individual can not speak at the public information session but would still like to provide comments to the re accreditation assessment team, he or she may do so by telephone. This telephone is private and unrecorded. The public may call 678-639-7533 on Sunday, April 24, 2006 between the hours of 2:00PM and 4:00PM.

Telephone comments as well as appearances at the public information session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency's ability to comply with CALEA's standards. A copy of the standards is available at the Roswell Police Department.

Persons wishing to offer written comments about the Roswell Police Department's ability to meet the standards for re accreditation or to seek additional information about CALEA are requested to write or call:

The Roswell Police Department must comply with 439 applicable standards to maintain accredited status, Chief Williams said.

Sergeant Frances Watson and Detective Joel Montezinos comprise the Police Department's Accreditation Program team. According to Sergeant Watson, the re accreditation assessment team is composed of law enforcement practitioners from similarly sized, but out-of-state agencies. The three assessors will review written material, conduct panel interviews with members of the Department and visit other locations where standard compliance can be witnessed. The assessors are:

Mr.Gregory D. King, Director of Public Safety California State University,Team Leader ; Mr. Michael Rivas of the Wood Dale Police Department, Wood Dale IL. and Mr. Raymond J. Rast (Retired) of the Independence Police Department, Independence Mo., team members

Once the Commission's assessors complete their review of the agency, they will report their findings and recommendations back to the full Commission. The Commission will then decide if the agency will be granted re accreditation status, Sergeant Watson stated.

Accreditation is for 3 years. During this time, the agency must submit annual reports attesting continued compliance with those standards under which it was initially accredited.
