The Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office has been named the very first recipient of the Traffic Safety Unit Award presented by the National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Sheriff Ted Paxton announced today.
“The award was created to recognize traffic enforcement units that exemplify the cutting edge in traffic safety programs,” said Juan Cardona, National Sheriff’s Association director of Traffic Safety. “The criteria evaluate the quality of each participating agency’s program in terms of office policy and training, public information and education, enforcement activity and effectiveness.”
“I am very proud that our agency has been recognized with such a distinguished award,” said Sheriff Paxton.
Sheriff Paxton was notified by Cardona this week of the award. It will be presented to Sheriff Paxton at the National Sheriff’s Association Conference in Seattle, Washington on June 27.
“I am very proud that our agency has been recognized with such a distinguished award,” said Sheriff Paxton. “We were competing with a number of agencies from throughout the country. We were selected by two panels of judges from the International Association of the Chiefs of Police and the National Sheriffs’ Association.
“I think this award speaks highly of the efforts of the men and women of this agency. They are working tirelessly everyday to save lives and reduce the number and severity of injuries on our roads and highways.”
Second and third place recipients are the Jacksonville Sheriffs’ Office in Florida and the Osceola County Sheriffs’ Office in Florida, respectively.
The Traffic Safety Unit Award targets three major traffic safety priorities: occupant protection, impaired driving, and speeding. According to Cardona, the award will allow Sheriffs’ offices to “make significant differences in the communities their officers serve professionally each day of every year.
