The Suwanee City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to install red-light cameras at six dangerous intersections in the city. Suwanee joins Duluth, Lilburn and Snellville in deploying the cameras.
Red-light runners will receive a ticket and pictures in the mail, and the fine is $70.
The Suwanee City Council agreed on a 6-0 vote to lease the cameras from Norcross-based LaserCraft at a cost of $4,140 a month for each of the six systems. The first system should be operational by the end of February.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has said the cameras cut the number of T-bone crashes that often result in serious injuries by 30 percent. And red-light running drops by as much as 50 percent when cameras are used.
LaserCraft will install and help manage the system, according to company representatives, Ron Sargent and Darlene Hinds.
The cameras are slated for intersections where the most crashes and injuries occur.
The six intersections include:
Ga. 317 and I-85; Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and Suwanee Dam Road; McGinnis Ferry Road and Buford Highway; McGinnis Ferry and Peachtree Industrial; Ga. 317 and Satellite Boulevard; and Ga. 317 (Lawrenceville Suwanee Rd.) at Horizon Drive.
