Two 17 year-old Forsyth County girls died last night in a single car wreck north of downtown Cumming.

The two, identified as Cortney Nichole Boles and Kara Rose Antognoli, were traveling northbound on Dahlonega Highway (Hwy. 9) near Hughes Drive when their late model Ford Explorer left the road, ran down an embankment and collided with a tree. Antognoli, who was identified as the passenger, was dead at the scene. Boles was flown to North Fulton Medical Center by Rescue Air, where she died shortly after arrival at the hospital.

According to Forsyth County Traffic Specialist Investigator Phil Alexander, witnesses stated that the Explorer drifted across the center line and the driver apparently over-corrected, causing her to leave the roadway. Alcohol and drugs are not suspected to have been contributing factors, nor was excessive speed.

According to Jennifer Caracciolo, spokesperson for the Forsyth County Board of Education, both victims were students at local high schools. Boles was a rising senior at North Forsyth High School. Antognoli had recently moved back to Forsyth County from Ohio and was jointly enrolled at Forsyth Central High School, where she was finishing up her senior year requirements and at Lanier Technical College.

The wreck happened at approximately 7:20 p.m. and weather does not appear to be a factor. The roads were dry when the wreck occurred. According to Alexander, both girls were wearing their seat belts.

School begins in Forsyth County on Monday, August 8. Counselors will be available to students and staff members at North Forsyth and Forsyth Central High Schools the beginning of the school year.

"Both Cortney and Kara were bright girls that were well liked by their classmates and our staff members," said Principal Kenny Foxx, Forsyth Central High School. "Our hearts and prayers go out to their family and friends during this time of great sorrow."
