Alpharetta, GA…The City of Alpharetta was awarded $260,939 by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) for the construction of a ½ acre detention pond to mitigate flooding issues in a section of downtown Alpharetta. The pond will positively impact approximately 27.1 acres of commercial, residential, undeveloped and school property near a tributary of Foe Killer Creek.
“Alpharetta is fortunate to have such a wonderful working relationship with GEMA,” said Councilman John Monson. “Our participation in this program benefits all parties, particularly the residents and businesses located near the planned detention pond.”
The grant is part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Flood Mitigation Assistance Grant Program which provides funding to pay for projects designed to reduce or eliminate damage from potential flood disasters. The funding from FEMA will cover 75 percent of the total project cost, with the City of Alpharetta covering the remaining 25 percent.
“We are pleased that the funding was available to take a common sense approach to reduce the risk from natural hazards,” said GEMA Director Charley English.
